Small Purchases Trigger Overdraft Fees

-
You may want to reconsider using overdraft protection at your bank or credit union.

Even the smallest debit card purchases are costing customers big fees to the tune of about 17 percent.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau's latest study found that most purchases that trigger overdraft protection are less than $24.

The fees for using the service average at about $34.

And because most consumers repay the funds within three days the fee translates to an APR of 17 percent.

Instead of paying for overdraft protection, consider keeping an amount of money in your account that serves as a buffer.
