Breckenridge Man Killed in Texas Panhandle Wildfires, Funeral Arrangements Set

BRECKENRIDGE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) - A Breckenridge man is one of four people killed during wildfires in the Texas Panhandle.

Friends and family members confirm Sloan Everett lost his life while trying to save cattle in from a fire Gray County on Monday. Cody Crockett and Sydney Wallace, a young couple in their early 20s, were killed as well.

Everett was on the Board of Directors for the Breckenridge Chamber of Commerce. A post to the Chamber's Facebook page leaves the following message in his memory:

Our hearts go out to the entire Everett family.

"Be encouraged by their passing and legacy. Instead of crying, live an inspired, spiritual and happy life like they did when they were here. Live each day with encouragement knowing that they are proud and smiling down on you from Heaven" ~ Matt Fraser

If you knew Sloan, you would know that is exactly what he would want you to do.

Funeral arrangements have been set for a Breckenridge father killed trying to save cattle from wildfires in the Texas Panhandle Monday.

Sloan Everett will be laid to rest at the Franklin Ranch in Gray County, Texas Thursday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. Memorial services will take place the following Saturday at the First Baptist Church in Breckenridge, Texas, beginning at 2:00 p.m.

Everett's family released the following statement in his memory:

We have lost Sloan, our wonderful son, brother, husband, father and friend to so many. He lived a life characterized by love and compassion for others, selflessness, hard work, loyalty and love for his family and, most of all, an abiding faith in God and belief in our Lord Jesus Christ as Savior. His life is a personal testimony of his faith, and he died trying to save his cattle and protect his friends. We will grieve for our loss always, for it is great, but we have comfort knowing that he is with the Lord and that he would encourage us each day to live selflessly and to hold fast to our faith in Jesus Christ, which he demonstrated for us so well during his life. We are comforted by the great outpouring of love by all those whose lives were touched by Sloan. To the end of our days, Sloan will be strength and a guiding light for us all.

The family is asking that any donations be made to the building fund of First Baptist Church in Breckenridge.
