Aww Shucks Corn Harvest Happening Tomorrow

WILDORADO - 2,000 area families will have free food on their table tomorrow, and it is all thanks to a partnership between Snack Pak 4 Kids and a local farmer.

Two months ago, the corn was just little sprouts, but when we saw it this morning, those little sprouts now looked like this.

The corn took just three months to grow.

25,000 ears of corn will be harvested by hundreds of volunteers tomorrow.

Officials tell us they plan to get it done in two hours so they can distribute it out to the community.

When the seeds were planted for the cornfield in May, officials said they anticipated to harvest 50,000 ears of corn, but due to some unforeseen circumstances, it will only be half that amount.

"We planted two fields this year again, and one field was taken out by the hail, and in about 15 minutes it was destroyed," said David Cleavinger, a Wildorado farmer. "So it just shows the risk that farmers take in producing food for our nation. This year we're going to go ahead and try to harvest this field, we've received lots of rain. "

Dyron Howell, the Volunteer Executive Director for Snack Pak 4 Kids, tells us, rain or shine, they will be there.

So far, they have had 200 volunteers sign up to help in the harvest.

Due to the amount of rain we have had in our area, as you can expect, it is very muddy in the cornfield.

Howell said volunteers will be asked to come ready to harvest with their rain boots in tow.

Howell told us Eastridge, Mesa Verde, Rogers, and Wills are the four schools benefiting from the corn harvest, as well as Heal the City, Hillside Christian Church, Catholic Charities, Mission Amarillo and various other organizations.
