APD Warning of Possible Home Alarm Scam

-
AMARILLO -- Amarillo Police are warning residents after receiving several calls about suspicious activity by door-to-door home alarm salesmen.

The “salesman” explains that the homeowner’s system needs to be replaced or upgraded, in one case using the false statement that the home owner’s original company had been purchased by another company.  They entered the home and changed the alarm system to another company, even obtaining a new contract. In another case, the home owner let them into the home to look at the system, but became suspicious, called the alarm company, and found that the man did not work for his contracted company.

APD talked with one salesman and found that the the "salesman" did not have the proper state license to sell or install alarms, and did not have the required city solicitor's permit.

Remember that a blue City of Amarillo permit does not guarantee the quality of any work or product, but it does document that the person’s criminal background and appropriate licenses have been reviewed at the Amarillo Police Department.

If you suspect a person is not with your alarm company, call the Amarillo Police Department at 378-3038.
