Amarillo Police and Xcel Warning About Phone Scam
By Karl Wehmhoener | firstname.lastname@example.org
AMARILLO -- Amarillo Police have been contacted by several residents that are reporting a telephone scam using Xcel Energy's name.
The criminals contact businesses and homes and claims to be from Xcel. They tell the intended victim that their account is overdue, and that power will be turned off immediately if they don't pay by providing bank or credit card information.
Xcel Energy is aware of this, and has posted warnings about this scam as far back as 2010.
Xcel Energy provides written notice of overdue accounts, never through an initial telephone contact.
If someone attempts to obtain personal or bank information from you, hang up. It is not necessary to call Xcel if you did not provide information.
If you have concerns about your account, contact Xcel Energy at 800-895-4999. Business accounts can call 800-481-4700.
