Amarillo Matters Inc.; New Nonprofit Advocating for Amarillo

AMARILLO - There's a new organization fighting for Amarillo.

Amarillo Matters Inc. is a new non-profit organization formed to advance the interests of the city.

This group is closely associated with a local political action committee known simply as "Amarillo Matters."

That group formed early this year and have directly been involved in politics.

The founders of this new group say they have a mission beyond politics.

Much of what this group does sounds political but they insist they are more than that.

The founders of Amarillo Matters Inc say they will work to secure projects beneficial, not only to the city, but the entire Panhandle and High Plains as a whole.

Their biggest example is the proposed Texas Tech Veterinary School.

The "Amarillo Matters" PAC helped secure more than $4 million in funding from the state at a time when it looked like the project was dead.

As they move forward with this project and others, Amarillo Matters Inc. Executive Director Steve Pair says one of their primary goals will be to bring the community together on individual projects.

"We really want to expand beyond Amarillo, Amarillo is still our primary focus. So much of what goes on in the Panhandle or in Amarillo has an impact in Amarillo as well. So if we can all work together, make the whole area stronger, I think it'll be better for everybody," said Pair.

Other than the large animal veterinary school, Amarillo Matters Inc. discovered another issue of concern, the issuance of building permits.

They say they have opened a dialogue with the city to address that concern.

As a 501c4 nonprofit organization, Amarillo Matters Inc. is considered a social welfare organization that allows them to advocate for the community.

This type of group is allowed to support or oppose political candidates or causes but it cannot be the group's primary focus.

The group's sister organization,  the "Amarillo Matters" PAC is expected to be involved in the March primaries.

They plan to release their endorsements soon.
