Amarillo Man Dies in Helicopter Crash Sunday Morning

Castro County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call Sunday morning from Parmer County Sheriff’s Office concerning a possible helicopter crash in Castro County.

Officials say the crash site was located in a wheat field approximately one half mile south of the 200 block of County Road 623.

Castro County Sheriff’s Office and the Texas Highway Patrol responded to the scene and conducted an investigation.

The pilot of the helicopter was identified as Amarillo's 68-year-old Donald Lee Oppliger. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Castro County Justice of the Peace Oreda Campbell. 

An autopsy was ordered.

The investigation into the crash is also being conducted by the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Bureau.
