Amarillo Hit-And-Run Suspect Charged with DWI, Evading Arrest, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia

AMARILLO -- On July 27 at about 2:20 a.m., Amarillo Police Helping in the investigation of the traffic fatality accident at 9th and S. Pierce were directing traffic near 9th and S. Fillmore when they saw a hit-and-run accident happen near 9th and S. Taylor.

Police sent out information that a blue pickup involved was leaving the scene southbound on S. Taylor. An officer in the area then saw a pickup matching that description westbound on the frontal road near IH-40 and Polk, and watched as the vehicle ran the red light at I-40 and Washington and entered I-40. The officer attempted to keep sight of the vehicle as it continued westbound on I-40 at a high rate of speed.

When the officer was able to close the distance and try to stop the vehicle, it exited at I-40 and Coulter and a front wheel came off of the rim.  The officer continued to follow the damaged vehicle as the driver crossed business parking lots before stopping near the 8200 block of Amarillo Blvd. West.

The pickup had extensive damage on the right front. The driver exhibited signs of alcohol intoxication.  He was placed under arrest.

Officers determined that the suspect rear-ended a red 2013 Ford that had been stopped southbound at the red light at 9th and S. Taylor.  The pickup then drove away from the scene.  The male driver of the Ford was transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

The suspect, William Kirk, 41, was booked into the Potter County Correctional Center for driving while intoxicated, evading arrest/detention in a motor vehicle, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
