AMARILLO -- The Click it or Ticket campaign that ran from May 19 through June 1 led to 214 seatbelt citations issued, nine child restraint citations issued, 78 speeding citations issued, and 225 citations for “other violations” issued.
The TxDOT grant funded officers made six municipal misdemeanor level arrests and one county court charge level arrest, serving 24 warrants in the course of the arrests. One of the arrests was for the offense of possession of marijuana.
A survey of four different locations completed within the city prior to the beginning of the campaign. It revealed a seatbelt usage rate of 83.6%. A survey of the same four locations completed after the enforcement period, and it revealed a seatbelt usage rate of 90.2 %. That is an increase of 6.6 percentage points. If this seatbelt usage rate can continue to increase throughout the year, it will go far in reducing deaths and injuries from traffic collisions within the city.
Wearing a seat belt reduces the risk of fatal injury in a crash by 45% for car occupants and 60% for light truck occupants.
