Afternoon Gas Leak Leads to Evacuation of Nursing Home

AMARILLO - 57 elderly citizens are back home tonight following a gas leak in south Amarillo.

Those citizens are residents of a nursing home who were removed from the area as a precaution.

The evacuations occurred at the Georgia Manor Nursing Home on the 2600 block of Southwest 46th, about a block away from the source of the leak.

There were no injuries and no immediate danger as dozens of Nursing Home residents were moved out Monday afternoon.

The reason, a road construction crew near 45th and Georgia hit something they were not expecting.

"Some of their equipment apparently cut a four-inch line under Georgia Street, caused a leak, so we had to block off an area so they can get in there and fix the leak," said Captain Larry Davis, Amarillo Fire Department Spokesperson.

While there were detours, the evacuation of the Georgia Manor Nursing Home was not mandatory. It had more to do with Monday's weather.

"Their staff wanted to do this because when this started, we had the HVAC system shut off.  So, now the building's starting to warm up and residents were starting to get uncomfortable, and the staff decided to make this transfer," said Cpt. Davis.

The residents were temporarily moved to a sister facility in northwest Amarillo.

They were expected to stay the night but were allowed to return home once the leak was fixed and the air conditioning was turned back on.

Southlawn Elementary and Fannin Middle School are near the scene of the leak but neither of those campuses was affected by the leak.
