Amarillo's League.. the Texas Cowboy League, plays two seasons a year. There are eight games in the season -- each team plays once a week.
Heather Seiler, WAKA TX Cowboy League Community Coordinator, says, "To form a team it has to be 14 people minimum. It has to be 5 girls and 5 guys. It is 21 and up because we are sponsored by Coors and Whiskey River Bar."
You might remember the game from third grade that involves a large, awkward red ball and running the bases, but for those of you that don't, here's a refresher.
Claudette Simpson, kickball player, says, "It's a lot like softball. The set up. You're going to run first, second, third base. You catch the ball and you can either tag, tag the player or throw them at the player, but when you throw the ball at hte player, it's gotta be shoulder down. You can't throw it at their face. You have three outs. WHen they pitch the ball, you uh, have three strikes, four fouls. It's a lot more relaxed but there are some competitive people."
You might think the only strategy involved is kicking the ball as hard as possible, but according to these players, you'd be wrong.
Lucas Johnson, kickball player, says, "What's your strategy to winning a game?"
Justin Proffit, kickball player, says, "There actually is a strategy to it."
Lucas Johnson, kickball player, says, "Kicking order is everything. There's 11 fielders which makes it pretty tough. Strategy's in the kicking. A lot of times if you can score one run two runs, you win the game."
Justin Proffit, kickball player, says, "I'm a bunter. My job's to get on base, okay? And usually there's three bunters and you have a clean up guy."
Another bonus to playing the game is meeting new people, and maybe even getting a boost in your love life.
Heather Seiler, WAKA TX Cowboy League Community Coordinator, says, "we've got a lot of people that've met and got married through kickball um a lot of people that've started dating."
Claudette Simpson, kickball player, says, "It's good for an athletic reason, but it's also good fellowship and good adult time. It's just fun. There's no other word for it. It's just the best time."
There's a pickup game this Thursday at 7 p.m. at El Alamo Park. Teams must be formed by July 28th and the season starts July 31st. For more information and to register visit the World Kickball Association.
