UPDATE: Amarillo Police have released the names of the victims killed in an accident on I-40 Saturday morning.
Sergent Brent Barbee with APD said the victims are Ygnacio Rodriquez age 59, Jorge Noe Catano age 36, and Julian Zamora age 63.
The victim's families have been notified. Police are not releasing the names of the victims still in the hospital.
Amarillo Police officers were dispatched to a collision in the eastbound lanes of I-40, just east of Whitaker Road.
A pickup was traveling east, towing a flatbed trailer loaded with sand and construction material. The trailer came loose from the pickup and veered across to the outside lane into lanes that were under construction.
The trailer hit the rear of a paving machine involved in the construction and five J. Lee Milligan employees that were on or around the heavy machinery. The trailer continued off the road and turned up on one side, causing the sand load to hit a construction crew pickup that was parked off the roadway beside the machinery.
The driver of the pickup that had been towing the trailer came back to the collision and has been interviewed by Traffic Investigations.
Three men were pronounced dead at the scene of the collision. Two others were transported to the hospital, one with life-threatening injuries and one with non-life threatening injuries. APD Traffic Investigations is still on the scene at this time.
Traffic has been rerouted from the highway at Eastern Street, which has caused eastbound traffic to back up to the west of the Interchange. Some traffic is using SE 34th and SE 3rd to avoid the delay.
Please use caution when driving in this area.
This case is still under investigation and no charges have been filed.
