12 Years Since 2006 Wildfires Began

Twelve years ago today some of the worst wildfires ever in the Panhandle began.

It started around 11 a.m. with a fire that caused a fatal wreck near Groom, and later that day, a deadly fire began in Hutchinson County.

In total, 12-people died including a Howardwick Volunteer Firefighter.

An estimated 700,000 acres burned that week killing nearly 3,000 head of cattle.

Nearly 100 structures burned, including 10 houses.
