Roy McCoy was born in Allison in the eastern Texas Panhandle. He moved to Dalhart in the 3rd grade, moved to California for 8th grade, and back to Dalhart for high school. He went to the University of Texas and Colorado State for his first three years of college. Then he was a United States Navy pilot for four years. He finished college at Colorado State while working as a radio DJ. He became sports director at a radio station in Farmington, New Mexico, in 1959. He moved to Amarillo in 1960 to work at KGNC radio. He eventually joined KAMR Local 4 News in 1973. He was chief meteorologist for several years until 1997. He worked for the Texas Workforce Commission until 2002. He started doing freelance weather and news reports for KAMR Local 4 News in 2008.
