Two West Texas A&M women’s soccer team standouts, senior Rhea Belgrave and sophomore Karyn Forbes, will bear some of that weight this weekend as T&T begins a two-game playoff with Ecuador for the final qualifying spot in the 2015 World Cup in Canada.
On the eve of the Lone Star Conference Women’s Soccer Tournament, six Lady Buff student-athletes have been named to LSC All-Conference and LSC Academic All-Conference teams.
The West Texas A&M No. 17 men’s team will look to grab back-to-back titles after winning its first in program history in 2013 while the women’s team will aim for the three-peat after winning titles in 2012 and 2013.
With the loss, the Buffs finish the year with a 9-7-1 overall record. The Chaps now improve to 9-5-1 (6-2, Heartland) with one game remaining on their schedule.
The junior has been a staple in the middle for the Lady Buffs this season, helping claim the program’s 19th Lone Star Conference Championship this past weekend with road wins over rivals Angelo State and Tarleton State.
The event is being held for the first time at ‘I Don’t Know Sports Bar & Grill’ in Amarillo, Texas.
The Buffs enter with a 5-4 record, while McMurry is 2-6.
WT and the rival Pioneers will face-off on Friday night at 7 p.m. followed by Senior Day on Saturday against A&M-Commerce with first serve set for 2 p.m.
Attendance is free to the event with students participating in contests and a raffle as well as prize giveaways. The Buffs will show off their skills in a dunk contest while also participating in a dance contest against the Lady Buffs.
The Lady Buffs are riding a 20 match win streak into their final regular season matches of the season this weekend.
The Buffs (9-6-1), who recently secured their 22nd consecutive non-losing season under head coach Butch Lauffer, can record their 21st double-digit win season in the program’s 24-year existence with a win against the Chaps (8-5-1, 6-2 Heartland).
This is the first time in the history of the poll that the Lady Buffs have been ranked No. 1 heading into a season.
